My name is Derek Cheves. On April 30, 2024, I chose a different path for my life, and I have been sober ever since. Addiction was a lifelong struggle, and it cost me years I can't get back. What I've learned is that recovery isn't a finish line, it's a daily decision. Every morning I make that choice again, and it has given me back my future.
My early years were difficult, marked by addiction and repeated time in jail beginning when I was twelve. For a long time, that cycle felt impossible to break. Today I can honestly say that past no longer defines me. It shaped me, and it drives me, but it doesn't limit me.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Florida, I now call Lexington, Kentucky home, where I'm building a new chapter as a full-time student. I completed drug court in April 2026, and I've earned places on both the Dean's List and the President's List at the University of the Cumberlands while pursuing a bachelor's in Supply Chain & Project Management.
Each of these represents hard work, discipline, and a step toward the person I want to be.
Successfully completed Kentucky's drug court program, a structured path through accountability, treatment, and lasting sobriety. Graduation marks the end of a two-year journey of proof that change is possible.
Earned the President's List honor at the University of the Cumberlands, recognizing outstanding academic achievement while studying Supply Chain & Project Management full-time.
Named to the Dean's List at the University of the Cumberlands in recognition of strong academic performance during my first semester of full-time study.
Completed high school equivalency requirements through the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet Office of Adult Education. A foundational milestone on the road to college.
